Betty Talbot was the 1978 recipient of the Glen S. Hummer Award recipient, an award given to the individual who makes the greatest contribution to the open water swimming in the United States.

She was the Grande dame of the California open water and rough water events. She collected information on the various races and published calendar of events at her own expense. She had the unique ability to solicit cooperation and established good working relationships between the various entities, i.e. Life Guard Groups, Swim Clubs, and local governments. She also officiated at and occasionally competed in the various races. Her work was instrumental in adding the open water and rough water events to the National AAU and United States Swimming National Championship programs.
