Bioluminescence

noun - The production and emission of light by living organisms, including in the ocean, which can be seen on the surface of the water by swimmers. It is a form of chemiluminescence where energy is released by a chemical reaction in the form of light emission.

The channel swimmers were enthralled by the bioluminescence in the ocean.

Origin: 1915–20; bio- (Greek: bios for 'living') + luminescence (Latin: lumen for 'light').
