Make Waves to Fight Cancer.
Participants can register as either a Swimmer or a WaveMaker Swimmer.
Swimmer - A swimmer is required to raise US$500 by event day. They will receive a tshirt and towel for their fundraising efforts. Swimmers under 18 are required to raise US$100 by event day.
WaveMaker Swimmer - A WaveMaker Swimmer is required to raise US$1,000 by event day. By pledging to raise this much in advance, we will award all WaveMakers who reach this goal with a special hat, Swim Across America arm band and cap on event day.
Participants can choose from 1/2-mile, 1-mile, 1.5 mile or 3 mile distances.
There is a US$50 registration fee that will be credited towards each swimmer's fundraising minimum after registering. Swimmers who raise US$2,500 or more will receive a premium SAA Jacket.
Swimmers & Teams
A person may elect to swim alone, or be part of a team. Many colleagues will form corporate teams, or teams may be formed in honor or memory of a loved one. All teams are inspirational and rewarding for those involved with Swim Across America.
The team fundraising minimum is equal to a lower individual minimum multiplied by the number of people on the team (for example, if there are 5 people on the team, the team minimum would be 5 x US$500 so it would be US$2,500).
The Swim Across America event will take place at Ohio St. beach, located at 400 N. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, Illinois 60611. Ohio St. beach is near Navy Pier. It is just north of Grand Ave and just east of Lake Shore Drive (here).
The 0.5 mile and 1 mile course are the same course that run parallel to the lakefront running path along the cement wall. The 1.5-mile triangular course is further out from the beach and the lakefront path and is marked by buoys and supported by lifeguards in rowboats. One lap around is 1.5 miles, twice around is 3 miles.
Temperatures have varied between 65°F (18°C) and 80°F (26.6°C) degrees. Wetsuits are allowed.
Particpants may wear wetsuits at their discretion.
