David Thomas was the 1999 recipient of the Glen S. Hummer Award, an award given to the individual who makes the greatest contribution to the open water swimming in the United States.

He served as USA Swimming National Open Water Swimming Coordinator and Chairman of the Open Water Committee for the past six years. During his tenure the USA Swimming National Open Water Swimming Program produced many team and individual champions and returned the United States as an international power. Equally if not more important he established an excellent working relationship with other elements on the National and International scene. His leadership style was highly successful in obtaining additional funding and he assisted greatly in the development of the overall open water program within USA Swimming.
