From OpenwaterpediaFINIS Swimsense® (Powered by SportSense® Technologies) is a groundbreaking training tool which captures critical performance data.
The Swimsense® monitor offered by FINIS straps onto the wrist like a watch and uses accelerometers, magnetometers and patent-pending proprietary algorithms to identify and quantify your swim. Analyze your performance on the device with pace times, distance (meters/yards/laps), stroke count, stroke rate, distance-per-stroke and calories burned across all four major strokes.
Performance data can then be uploaded to the Swimsense® Training Log for additional analysis and historical review. The Swimsense® Performance Monitor provides a revolutionary degree of information, which is key to tracking and improving your swim performance. Using accelerometers, magnetometers and software algorithms, the Swimsense takes the metrics out of working out by counting laps, calculating distances swum by type of stroke used, stroke count, stroke pace, distance per stroke and calories burned. For many, these details are helpful to know and provide the data and motivation to improve. Sure you can count your laps by yourself and do the mathematics in the traditional manner, but a lightweight watch can now manage and analyze this myriad data for you and your coach.
Open Water Source Product Review
Like the leap from pen and paper to an abacus to a handheld calculator, the Swimsense® effectively eliminates mental calculations from your workout equation. This in-the-water thought process can now to applied to a focus on stroke mechanics and pacing. But the advantages of the Swimsense are also apparent in a post-workout comparison because you can analyze your stroke tempo during your main sets over the course of a season.
So both in the water and at home, the advantages of knowing these metrics and charting your progress over time can help you and your coach prepare and do increasingly difficult workouts or achieve greater stroke efficiencies.
Like many emerging technologies, the Swimsense® is a very clever step in the right direction. For triathletes and open water swimmers, the Swimsense® is not yet compatible outside of the pool. Because the Swimsense works its magic due to changes in direction at the pool walls, its internal accelerometers and magnetometers are not used in the open water. However, the Swimsense product designers at FINIS are working on the next 2.0 version with features specifically useful for open water swimmers.
