Freedom Day Swim, part of the Freedom Swim Series, is an extreme solo 7.5 km ocean race close to Freedom Day in South Africa from Robben Island in Big Bay, Bloubergstrand, South Africa. Freedom Day commemorates the first ever democratic elections held on 27 April 1994.

Beneficiary

Vista Nova School for Children with Cerebral Palsy and/or other learning disorders is the Freedom Day Swim beneficiary. The Vista Nova School (Vista School) cares for 400 children with special needs from all over the Cape Peninsula. Remedial education and therapies are provided to learners from the age of three to eighteen, spanning from nursery school right through to Grade 12. Many of the children have learning barriers, are physically challenged or have cerebral palsy. Teachers and therapists work together to ensure that all children are empowered to perform to the best of their abilities, leading happy and productive lives.

Freedom Swim Series

The Freedom Swim Series includes the Youth Day Swim (16 June each year), Human Rights Day Swim (21 March each year), Brian Curtis Mile, Reconciliation Day Swim (16 December each year), Women's Day Swim (9 August each year), Freedom Day Swim (around 27 April), and Heritage Day Swim (24 September each year).

The Freedom Swim Series is a succession of cold water Cape Town sea swim races to promote swimming and to raise funds for good causes. Each swim takes place on a public holiday specifically to celebrate these significant days and South Africa’s history and heritage. They aim to raise awareness of the significance of these public holidays and to give back by raising funds for causes which are related to these national public holidays.
