George Thornton is an American open water swimmer who, at the age of 73, attempted to become the oldest individual to successfully cross the English Channel. The attempt by the retired Colorado State University professor from Fort Collins, Colorado of 8 August 2013 was halted at 9 hours 18 minutes after being escorted by Eddie Spelling on the boat Anastasia.

He is the oldest person to complete the 10 km marathon swim at the Horsetooth Open Water Swim in Colorado. He is also the co-race director together with Joe Bakel.
