noun - Hardening is the act or process of becoming acclimated to cold waters among open water swimmers, marathon swimmers, extreme swimmers, and ice swimmers. It also refers to the gradual exposure to cold water.

The swimmers from Ireland are prepared due to all of their months of hardening.
