verb - To impede is to obstruct, interfere or retard in movement or progress by cutting off, swimming into, blocking or pulling on legs (i.e., zipline), ankles, arms or shoulders of other swimmers during an open water swimming race. Impeding is a common example of physicality in open water swimming competitions.

The swimmer was impeded by his competitor when he was cut off towards the end of the race.
