L'Escala is a city in Girona, Catalonia, Spain. It is situated on the Costa Brava, located between the southern end of the Gulf of Roses and Cala (bay) Montgó and site of the Swim the Costa Brava open water swimming competition. It is an important fishing port and tourist center, and has a festival dedicated to its famous anchovies.

Swim the Costa Brava is part of the PROSwim Challenge, the first European championship open water swimming conducted in stages. The 3-race event is held in l´Escala and organised by Culture Sport.

The 2013 PROSwim Challenge comprises of 2 competitions over 2 consecutive weeks and in different locations in the Mediterranean waters.

Stage 1 - Swim the Costa Brava on 20-21 September 2013 in L’Escala, Spain.
Stage 2 - Swim the Island on 5-6 October 2013 in Bergeggi, Italy/
