Lago Maggiore or Lake Maggiore is a large lake that borders Switzerland and Italy, located north between the mountains of Piedmont and the Swiss Alps. In Lake Maggiore, there are 11 islands including the Borromean Islands (Isola Bella, Isola Madre, Isola dei Pescatori, Little island of St. John, and Islet (or rock) of Malghera) and the Brissago Islands (Island of San Pancrazio, Island of St. Apollinaris , Cannero Castles, and Isolate Partegora).

Lago Maggiore is site of the Traversata A Nuoto Del Lago Maggiore, an open water swimming competition organized by Alenia Aermacchi. One race is 1.5 km starts at the beach of the Golfo de Reno-Liggiuno (Gulf of Reno-Liggiuno); the other race is a 4 km crossing of the lake that starts from the beach Villa Pallavicino and finishes at the Golfo Reno-Liggiuno.

Lago Maggiore is also site of the Traversata di Nuoto Intra–Laveno-Cerro (Crossing of Lake Maggiore), a 3-race event with 400m, 2.5 km, and 4 km open water swims organized by Claudio Bottene in July.
