noun - The mainland is a name given to a large land mass in a region relative to a nearby island or islands or relative to the largest of a group of islands in an archipelago. Because of its larger area, a mainland almost always has a much larger population than its associated islands. In the channel swimming community, mainland is often used when swimming between an island and the larger nearby land mass.

He swam from Catalina Island to the California mainland.
