Saint Martin Island Long Distance Channel Swimming

The 15 km Saint Martin Island Long Distance Channel Swimming event was nominated for the WOWSA Open Water Swimming Performance of the Year in 2012. Its nomination reads as follows:

"Ten teenagers - 5 boys and 5 girls including some who had never seen the ocean before - completed a 14.5 km swim across the Bay of Bengal to help kick-start the beauty of open water swimming in that tropical part of the world. After starting on Shahpari Island of Teknaf with its insanely long beaches (at 80 km) and finishing on St Martin Island, a coral island holiday spot in Bangladesh, all ten swimmers finished the Bangla Channel swim between 3 - 4 hours. Organized by the Bangladesh Swimming Federation, the swim introduced another part of paradise to the global open water swimming community. For the teenager's joy and enthusiasm in tackling a tough swim of previously unthinkable distance, for the policies and procedures established by the organizers to create a safe swim that can be duplicated by others, the Saint Martin Island Long Distance Channel Swimming is a worthy nominee for the 2012 WOWSA Open Water Swimming Performance of the Year."
