Because Girls Can relay team of Colleen Shields, Nicole Mallette, Samantha Whiteside, Rebekah Boscariol, and Mona Al Sharari

Nicole Mallette-Harrison is a Canadian pool and open water swimmer who completed a swim across Lake Ontario at the age of 31 on 9 August 1997 in 16 hours 10 minutes on her third attempt following two attempts in 1995 and 1996 when she was coached by Colleen Shields.

Because Girls Can

She is also a member of the Because Girls Can relay team that will attempt a charity event in a swim across the length of Lake Ontario together with 61-year-old Colleen Shields, 48-year-old Nicole Mallette-Harrison, 23-year-old Samantha Whiteside, 18-year-old Rebekah Boscariol, and 18-year-old Mona Sharari starting on 23 July 2013. They will swim in 2-hour legs throughout the expected 5-day non-stop unprecedented relay.

Because Girls Can is an open water swimming relay team will attempt to swim 305 km on behalf of a charity event for Because I am a Girl, a charity that works to end gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls – and everyone around them – out of poverty.
