Because Girls Can relay team of Colleen Shields, Nicole Mallette, Samantha Whiteside, Rebekah Boscariol, and Mona Al Sharari
Samantha Whiteside is a 23-year-old Canadian pool and open water swimmer who crossed Lake Ontario on 9 August 2006 at the age 16 in 15 hours 11 minutes, only 1 minute outside the women's record of 15 hours 10 minutes was set by Cindy Nicholas in 1974 as a charity swim for The Arthritis Society.

Because Girls Can

Whiteside is also a member of the Because Girls Can relay team that will attempt to swim the length of Lake Ontario in a 305 km relay together with 61-year-old Colleen Shields, 48-year-old Nicole Mallette, 18-year-old Rebekah Boscariol, and 18-year-old Mona Sharari starting on 23 July 2013. They will swim in 2-hour legs throughout the expected 5-day non-stop unprecedented relay.

Because Girls Can will attempt to swim 305 km as a charity event for Because I am a Girl, a charity that works to end gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls – and everyone around them – out of poverty.
