Santa Cruz Roughwater Swim
The Santa Cruz Roughwater Swim is an annual summertime tradition in the northern California city of Santa Cruz that began when the Santa Cruz Surf Lifesaving Association decided to organize an open water swimming race to draw support for the sport and for fellow lifeguards. Rick Gould has been race director for nearly 40 years. The race is affiliated with Pacific Masters Swimming, a swim club for adults.
The swimmers were divided by age into three waves, which consisted of Masters 18-39 years old, Masters 40+ and USA Swimming 18-and-under. The top three in each men's and women's age group are given medals at a post-race awards ceremony.
It is one of America's Top 100 Open Water Swims.
