noun - Seeded event is an open water swimming competition that serves as a qualifying swim for another swim of similar or longer distance. Times from a seeded event are used to place swimmers in an appropriate heat in a major swim.

Origins

The Midmar Mile started seeded events as a means to group swimmers of comparable abilities in its annual race.
