noun - Taper or tapering or taper workout is a reduction in the daily or weekly amount of time and distance swum by swimmers or triathletes in preparation for a major competition, triathlon or solo swim. The taper can be a gradual reduction in distance swum over a 1 - 4 week period prior to the race or solo swim. The taper allows for additional rest, increased sprint or speed work, and concentration on certain technical aspects of racing (e.g., starts, turns, finishes, pacing, navigation, positioning, and feeding).

The coach told the team that they would begin their taper 2 weeks before the championships.
