Chris Bryan


Christopher Bryan is a professional marathon swimmer from Co. Clare, Ireland. Bryan competed in the FINA 10KM Marathon Swimming World Cup and trained under coach Ronald Claes at Swim Ireland’s Limerick High Performance Centre. He began his open water swimming career in surf lifesaving and transitioned to the national open water swimming circuit in his teens. He was the first Irish open water swimmer to race in an open water swimming event for Ireland at a World Championships.

Bryan is an Honour Swimmers in the Hall of Fame – Marathon Swimming Ireland of the inaugural Class of 2018. Open Water Swimming Career Highlights[edit]
- At the 2011 FINA World Swimming Championships in Shanghai, China, he place 8th out of 51 swimmers in the 5 km event in 56 minutes 28 seconds, only 11 seconds behind winner Thomas Lurz of Germany. *He placed third at the 2012 European Open Water Swimming Cup in Eilat, Israel.
- He represented Ireland in the 2012 FINA Olympic 10km Marathon Swimming Qualifier in Setubal Bay, Portugal.
- He is the world record holder at the Sandycove Island Challenge in Kinsale, Ireland.
- He finished seventh in the 2013 World University Games 10 km marathon swim in Kazan, Russia on 7 July 2013.
- He finished third in the 2015 Great North Swim in Windermere, England.
- He competed in the 2016 Olympic 10km Marathon Swimming Qualification Race in Setubal, Portugal.
- On 18 June 2011, he competed in the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Setubal, Portugal finishing in 1 hour 40 minutes 52 seconds.
- At the 2011 LEN Cup held in in Hoorn, Netherlands, he finished third finishing in 2 hours 1 minute 23.90 seconds.

- On 16 July 2011, he competed in the FINA World Swimming Championships in Shanghai, China finishing in 1 hour 56 minutes 52 seconds.
- On 24 April 2012, he competed in the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Cancun, Mexico finishing in 2 hours 1 minute 30 seconds.
- On 26 April 2012, he competed in the 15 km FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix in Cancun, Mexico in 3 hours 2 minutes 36 seconds.
- In 2012, he competed in the 19 km Jarak-Sabac Marathon Swim in Serbia in 2 hours 52 minutes 15 seconds, finishing third overall.
- On 19 July 2013, he competed in the FINA World Swimming Championships 10 km in Barcelona, Spain finishing in 1 hour 49 minute 33 seconds.
- On 1 February 2014, he competed in the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Viedma, Argentina finishing in 1 hour 52 minute 40 seconds.
- On 5 April 2014, he competed in the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Cancun, Mexico finishing in 2 hours 1 minute 14 seconds.
- On 28 June 2014, he competed in the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Setubal, Portugal finishing in 1 hour 56 minutes 9 seconds.

- On 20 June 2015, he competed in the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Balantonfured, Hungary finishing in 1 hour 43 minutes 2 seconds.
- On 27 June 2015, he competed in the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Setubal, Portugal finishing in 1 hour 55 minutes 13 seconds.
- On 24 July 2015, he competed in the FINA World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia finishing in 1 hour 53 minutes 22 seconds.
- On 17 October 2015, he competed in the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Hong Kong finishing in 1 hour 56 minutes 18 seconds.
- On 26 February 2016, he competed in the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Abu Dhabi, UAE finishing in 1 hour 49 minutes 5 seconds.
- On 11 March 2017, he competed in the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Abu Dhabi, UAE finishing in 1 hour 52 minutes 25 seconds.
- In 2010 he became the first Irishman to qualify for European Open Water Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
- He qualified for every senior Irish squad at the European Championships and FINA World Championships level since 2010, competing in the 5 km, 10 km and 25 km distances.
- He won multiple 5 km and 10 km victories in Europe, including 8th and 16th place finishes at 2011 FINA World Championships and 2013 FINA World Championships, respectively.
- He trained in Ireland’s first established swimming performance centre in the University of Limerick under the guidance of numerous internationally recognized coaches over a period of 10 years.
- He competed in the 19.5 km marathon swim from Hel to Gdynia, Poland in 2012 and 2013.
- He competed in the 33 km FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix race in Lake Ohrid, Macedonia in 2012.
- He finished 9th in the European Open Water Swimming Championships 25 km in Berlin, Germany in 2014.
- He established the first annual Malbay Swim in Co. Clare, Ireland beginning in 2017.
