2020 World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year Nomination
I Swim And Travel Around The World by Yasu Fukuoka of Japan was nominated for the 2020 WOWSA Awards in the World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year category with the following nomination: Yasu Fukuoka is a 2-time Olympic marathon swimmer who entered the finish chute at the 2016 Rio Olympics in position to capture Japan's first Olympic medal in open water swimming. Yasu, as he is known among his competitors, in the Japanese media, and among race directors around the world is a personable, passionate athlete who has literally traveled around the world to over 50 countries either racing or training in pursuit of an Olympic medal. In cooperation with his Dutch Olympic friends including gold medalist Ferry Weertman, world record holder Esmee Vermeulen, Paralympic gold medalist Lisa Kruger, Olympic physiotherapist Jan Herber, and Olympic coach Patrick Pearson, Yasu created a lifestyle brand of clothing that speaks swimming. For establishing the first authentic clothing brand for swimmers, for designing fashionable jackets, jeans, sweatshirts, shirts, baseball and knit caps, t-shirts, cases and towels specifically for swimmers, and for identifying and defining a persona and ambiance for those who love training and competing in the water, I Swim And Travel Around The World by Yasu Fukuoka is a worthy nominee for the 2020 World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year.
2018 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year Nomination
Ferry Weertman defended his 2016 Olympic 10K Marathon Swimming gold medal with a dramatic, close victory at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Hungary. His success continued in 2018 and is powered by an intensity and laid-back passion that is unmistakable in the 26-year-old Dutchman. He has both speed and stamina in abundance based on a massive amount of fast training mileage in the pool and open water. He not only has the drive to realize his athletic dreams, but he also has the personality to represent the sport in a responsible manner befitting modern-day heroes. With a giant target on his back, Weertman won a wide variety of races from the RCP Tiburon Mile in San Francisco to the FINA/HOSA Marathon Swim World Series race in Qatar. He was in the lead pack in races in Seychelles, Portugal, Hungary, and China and is ranked first in the 2018 FINA/HOSA Marathon Swim World Series. For his competitive spirit and composure under pressure in the highest levels of competition, for winning the 10 km marathon swim and the 5 km mixed team relay at the LEN European Championships in Scotland's Loch Lomond, for his genuinely engaging personality in casually addressing questions from the media and fans, Ferry Weertman of the Netherlands is a worthy nominee for the 2018 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year.
2017 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year Nomination
Ferry Weertman defended his 2016 Olympic 10K Marathon Swimming gold medal with a dramatic, close victory at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Hungary. These back-to-back performances demonstrated the intensity and passion that the 25-year-old Dutchman has for swimming. He has both speed and stamina in abundance based on a massive amount of training mileage in the pool and open water. He not only has the drive to realize his athletic dreams, but he also has the personality to represent the sport in a responsible manner befitting modern-day heroes. With a giant target on his back, Weertman won the 10 km world championship by 0.1 seconds with another ferocious sprint to the finish. For his competitive spirit and composure under pressure in the highest levels of competition, for continuing to win despite swimming with a giant target on his back, for his genuinely engaging personality in casually addressing questions from the media and fans, Ferry Weertman is a worthy nominee for the 2017 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year.

2016 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year Nomination
Ferry Weertman has put in the miles in the pool, in the open water, and in airplanes as he devoted his life to becoming an Olympic champion. He realized his dream come true with his dramatic victory at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games 10 km marathon swim. He won gold under the most stressful of circumstances. But the 24-year-old Dutchman stuck with his original plan and reeled in the initial Australian leader who was over 100 meters ahead of him during the second half of the race. In a final sprint for the ages, Weertman out-sprinted, outstretched and out-touched Greece's Spyridon Gianniotis to win. He did not even realize he won until he received a text on the beach from his friends halfway around the world. For his competitive spirit and composure under pressure in winning the Olympic gold in Rio, for his genuinely warm personality in answering questions from fans and the media around the world, for committing himself 100% to realize his dreams and believing in his preparation, Ferry Weertman is a worthy nominee for the 2016 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year.
2014 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year Nomination
Ferry Weertman is part of the continuation of world-class open water swimming from the Netherlands. He is a force to reckon with at every elite competition he participates in whether it is a lake, sea or ocean. He swims well in turbulent conditions, tranquil waters, cold conditions and warm-water venues. He is savvy and tactical in the rough-and-tumble world of rounding turn buoys, while pack swimming along long straightaways, and in the latter stages of FINA World Cup and FINA Grand Prix events. He won the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix in Mexico in challenging conditions and two gold medals in the 5 km solo race and the 5 km team pursuit event, leading Sharon van Rouwendaal and Marcel Schouten, at the 2014 LEN European Championships in Germany. For his innate DNA that suits him well in all open water conditions, for his tenacity in workouts and races, for his gracious nature on land that is balanced by his navigational IQ and competitive nature in the water, Ferry Weertman is a worthy nominee for the 2014 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year.
