Mark Warkentin (born November 14, 1979) is an Olympic open water swimmer from Santa Barbara, California, USA. He is currently coaching in his hometown of Santa Barbara.
Swimming Highlights
- After graduating from San Marcos High School in 1998, Warkentin attended the University of Southern California, from which he graduated in 2003 with a degree in communication.
- While a Trojan, he was a four-time All-American. He was awarded USC's Willis Award as a freshman.
- He is the founder and head coach of the Santa Barbara Open Water Swim Camp held in Santa Barbara, California.
- He won the 8-mile Boston Light Swim in Massachusetts.
- He qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing following his performance at the 2008 FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships.
- In the lead-up to the Games he was noted by Time as one of its "100 Olympic Athletes To Watch."
- He is a two-time national champion while representing the Santa Barbara Swim Club under Head Coach John Dussliere in the 25 km marathon swim, the longest sanctioned race in USA Swimming.
- At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Warkentin finished in 8th place with a time of 1:52:13.0, 21 seconds behind gold medalist Maarten van der Weijden.
- He was just barely touched-out by Maarten van der Weijden for the gold medal in the 25 km 2008 FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships in Sevilla, Spain.
- He was 4th in the 25 km race at the 2007 FINA World Swimming Championships in Melbourne, Australia.
- He competed in the 10 September 2009 Manhattan Challenge Swim against 4-time Olympian Petar Stoychev of Bulgaria.
