Santa Barbara Channel Islands

San Miguel Island is part of the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. It is 25.9 miles (22.5 nm or 41.6 km) from San Miguel Island to Point Conception on the California coast. A swim across this channel has been conquered only once, by Penny Palfrey in 2008 in 11 hours 29 minutes.

The channel between San Miguel Island and Santa Rosa Island has been conquered once by Julian Rusinek in 2013 in 2 hours 25 minutes.

The Santa Barbara Channel Swimming Association (SBCSA) supports and sanctions open water swims in this channel and the other 7 of the 8 Channel Islands.

Julian Rusinek Scholarship[edit]

The Julian Rusinek Scholarship, funded by American open water swimmer Julian Rusinek, helps underwrite the costs of channel swim attempts by deserving American marathon swimmers across and between the San Miguel Island, Santa Rosa Island, Santa Cruz Island, Anacapa Island, San Nicolas Island, Santa Barbara Island, and San Clemente Island.

Inter-island Channel Swim[edit]

A 3.5-mile (5.8 km) inter-island channel swim between Santa Rosa Island and San Miguel Island was first completed by Julian Rusinek in 2013 in 2 hours 25 minutes. It is the shortest channel crossing of the Santa Barbara Channel Swimming Association.
