Sub-3 x 2 Marathon Club
noun - The Sub-32 Marathon or Sub-32 Marathon Club (also Sub-3 Squared Club or Sub-3 x 2 Marathon Club or the Sub 3 Squared Marathon Club) is a select group of endurance athletes who have swum a full 10 km marathon swim without a wetsuit, fins or paddles under 3 hours and who have also run a full 42 km marathon run under 3 hours.
The 10 km marathon swim can be done in fresh or salt water, but must be correctly measured by GPS and not done downstream in a flowing river. The marathon swim can be done solo or as part of a race. The marathon run can be done in any marathon running event or a solo run documented with GPS by an independent observer.
Types
- The Lifetime Sub-32 Marathon is the completion of both a Sub-3 marathon run and a Sub-3 marathon swim during one's lifetime.
- The Calendar Year Sub-32 Marathon is the completion of both a Sub-3 marathon run and a Sub-3 marathon swim during one calendar year.
- The Monthly Sub-32 Marathon is the completion of both a Sub-3 marathon run and a Sub-3 marathon swim during one month's period.
- The Weekend Year Sub-32 Marathon is the completion of both a Sub-3 marathon run and a Sub-3 marathon swim over one 48-hour period.
- The Back-to-back Sub-32 Marathon is the completion of both a Sub-3 marathon run and a Sub-3 marathon swim, performed back-to-back during a 6-hour period on one day.
Origin
The concept was initially conceived during the 1985 Honolulu Marathon and first formally proposed in 2012 by Steven Munatones of the World Open Water Swimming Association. Attempts to join the Sub-3 Squared Club were first formalized in a competitive setting at the Cold Half and Cold Standard in Hong Kong in 2014.
Sub-6 Marathon Club
The Sub-6 Marathon Club is a select group of endurance athletes who have swum a full 10 km marathon swim without a wetsuit, fins or paddles and who have run a full 42 km marathon run for a cumulative total time of under 6 hours.
Similar to Sub-32 Marathon Club, the The 10 km marathon swim can be done in fresh water or salt water, but must be correctly measured by GPS and not done downstream in a flowing river. The swim can be done solo or as part of a race. The marathon run can be done in any marathon running event or a solo run documented with GPS by an independent observer.
Members
Fran Crippen of the U.S.A. and Chris Palfrey of Australia are the only certified members of the Sub-32 Marathon Club or the Sub-6 Club yet. Doug Woodring organized the first Sub 3 Squared weekend event as part of the Cold Half marathon swim and the Cold Standard running marathon in Hong Kong in February 2014.
Darren Miller will attempt a Sub-32 Marathon in Presque Isle State Park in Pennsylvania in 2015.
