The Alcatraz Escape Routes Swim is defined as bioprene swim (i.e., without a wetsuit) from Alcatraz Island to three separate mainland locations in San Francisco Bay within a 4-day period. The 3 routes are the reported and assumed swim routes that prisoners swam to freedom after escaping from Alcatraz Island.

Swim #1 from Alcatraz Island to St. Francis Beach

Start 300 yards south of Alcatraz Island – 37 deg 49’ 23.64’ N / 122 deg 25’ 18.90 W Finish is anywhere on St Francis Beach. On Day #1 on 13 April 2019, Tonge completed the 2-mile swim in 40 minutes 28 seconds.

Swim #2 from Alcatraz Island to Horseshoe Cove

Start 500 yards north of Alcatraz Island – 37 deg 49’ 52.10 N / 122 deg 25’ 35.15 W Finish in Marin County is anywhere in Horseshoe Cove. On Day #2 on 14 April 2019, Tonge completed the 3-mile swim in 2 hours 20 minutes.

Swim #3 from Alcatraz Island to Angel Island

Start on the north side of Alcatraz – 37 deg 49’ 50.49 N / 122 deg 25’ 37.07 W Finish is anywhere on Angel Island. On Day #3 on 15 April 2019, Tonge completed the 2.4-mile swim in 1 hour 4 minutes.
