Alkmaar is a city in the Netherlands in the province of Noord Holland. Alkmaar is well known for its traditional cheese market and its open water swims and relays (including Ploegen Tijdrace), conducted in both freestyle and breaststroke. The Alkmaar Open Water Swim is one of these races.
