Aurélie Muller (born 7 June 1990) is a 34-year-old professional marathon swimmer and open water swimming television commentator from France, swimming under coach Philippe Lucas at Cercle des nageurs narbonnais. She was inducted as an Honor Swimmer in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, Class of 2025.

Muller est une nageuse française spécialiste des épreuves de nage en eau libre. Après s'être distinguée dans les championnats internationaux juniors en bassin, elle s'oriente vers l'eau libre. 2017 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year Nomination

Aurélie Muller resurrected her career after the ultimate disappointment at being disqualified on the last stroke of the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim to lose a medal. Her recovery was tremendous as she won the 10 km FINA World Championship title in Hungary. But that was not all. At the FINA World Championships, the 27-year-old also earned a silver medal in the 5 km, took a gold in the 5 km team event, and finished 8th in the 25 km race. She also won the greatest prize money due to her victory the FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup in Abu Dhabi and finished 3rd in the 57 km Maratón Acuática Internacional Santa Fe – Coronda in Argentina. For becoming the 10 km world champion after her Olympic disappointment viewed on television by millions, for never giving up on herself and swimming so strongly throughout the year from a 1.25 km sprint to a 57 km marathon, for speaking eloquently about the sport and her comeback, Aurélie Muller is a worthy nominee for the 2017 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year.

Aurélie Muller is making the most of her second chance. The 2008 Olympian did not make the 2012 Olympics, but she came roaring back as the 2015 world champion in the 10 km marathon swim. Her victory at the FINA World Swimming Championships made her the first female swimmer to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. With her tattoo "chase your dreams" on her foot, the 25-year-old realized one step of her dream by dramatically separately herself from a lead pack full of Olympic medalists and world champions by over 20 seconds. For her dominating victory that demonstrated her new-found confidence and tremendous stamina and speed, for never letting up on her Olympic dreams despite disappointment, for her genuinely cheerful and radiantly positive mindset before and after her first world championship title, Aurélie Muller is a worthy nominee for the 2015 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year.

Biographie

Adepte des épreuves de fond en nage libre, Aurélie Muller débute sa carrière dans les bassins et se signale dans les catégories d'âge juniors en remportant en 2006 le titre mondial du 1 500 m nage libre à Rio de Janeiro, ainsi que le titre européen du 400 m nage libre à Palma de Majorque.

L'année suivante, convaincue par Olivier Antoine, son entraîneur du Centre nautique de Sarreguemines où elle est licenciée, elle se lance dans les courses de nage en eau libre. Elle se distingue rapidement en décrochant le titre de championne d'Europe juniors du 5 km à Milan, une couronne conservée l'année suivante à Sète. L'année suivante, le principal rendez-vous annuel a lieu à Pékin lors des Jeux olympiques qui accueillent pour la première fois une épreuve en eau libre au sein de leur programme, celle du 10 km. Aurélie Muller obtient sa qualification en terminant neuvième dans cette épreuve aux Championnats du monde se tenant à Séville en mai. Aux Jeux olympiques, en août, elle ne se classe cependant que 21e en raison, entre autres, d'un mauvais départ1. Victime d'une fringale, elle connaît une nouvelle mésaventure l'année suivante à l'occasion des Championnats du monde de Rome en terminant en 41e position alors qu'elle figurait dans le peloton de tête à mi-course2,3.

En juin 2010, elle est battue par Ophélie Aspord, plus jeune d'une année, lors du 10 km des Championnats de France en eau libre mais obtient malgré tout sa qualification pour les rendez-vous internationaux de l'année4,5. Le premier d'entre eux se déroule à Roberval au Canada où sont organisés les Championnats du monde. Alignée sur 5 et 10 km, la nageuse manque de peu une médaille sur l'épreuve olympique. Luttant pour la médaille de bronze avec l'Australienne Melissa Gorman, la Française est disqualifiée pour comportement antisportif durant l'emballage final6. Sur 5 km, toujours à son avantage, elle termine sixième à un peu moins de deux secondes du podium7.

Quelques jours plus tard, elle lutte de nouveau pour une médaille à l'occasion des Championnats d'Europe de Budapest mais échoue au pied du podium du 10 km pour une seconde et un dixième. Par ailleurs vainqueur du 1 500 m nage libre lors des Championnats de France organisés en avril à Saint-Raphaël, elle est qualifiée sur cette distance et doit la nager lors des épreuves en bassins de l'Euro2. Le 13 août 2010, dans la 5e série du 1 500 m m nage libre, elle nage cette distance en 16 min 42 s 798, soit le 10e temps des séries cumulées, insuffisant pour lui permettre d'accéder à la finale.

En 2011, aux championnats du monde de Shangai en Chine, elle remporte la médaille d'argent sur le 5 km dames, devenant la première Française de l'histoire à être médaillée mondiale sur 5 km, et la seconde en eau libre (après la médaille de bronze de Célia Barrot en 2010).
