Calais is a port city in northern France. It is the principal ferry crossing point between France and England and was the landing spot of Captain Matthew Webb during his historic crossing of the English Channel on 24 August 1875. Calais overlooks the Strait of Dover, the narrowest point in the English Channel, which is 34 km wide here, the closest French town to England.
