David Whyte from Great Britain was inducted as an Honor Pilot in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF) in 2007.
Piloting Career
- Whyte piloted the first six-way English Channel relay that took 61 hours 27 minutes.
- Whyte retired after 25 years of piloting 305 English Channel swimmers from 32 different countries doing 83 solo crossings between 1984 and 2008.
- Whyte piloted Richard Blatny, a breaststroke channel swimmer in 23 hours 38 minutes across the English Channel in 1998.
- Whyte piloted a number of disabled swimmers, paraplegic and multi-amputees, on both solo and relay swims across the English Channel including Walid Ahmed Abdel Kader, a disabled Egyptian who has one arm and one leg who completed a 33.5 km crossing in 12 hours 59 minutes in 1990.
- Whyte piloted Eric Johnson on his France-to-England Channel crossing record in 1985 in 8 hours 20 minutes.
- Whyte piloted both Michael Read MBE and Kevin Murphy when they achieved their respective King of the Channel® successes.
