Denize Le Pennec before swimming across the English Channel
Denize Le Pennec is an open water swimmer from Jersey. She was coached by Maurice Lakeman, Founder and President of the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club that is honored as an Honour Organisation by the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 2014.
Open Water Swimming Career
- On 7 September 1966, she completed a 33.5 km crossing of the English Channel from Wissant, France to Dungeness, England in 20 hours 50 minutes, swimming without goggles at the age of 16. She was the first successful English Channel swimmer from Jersey. She received the 1966 Churchill Award for Courage as its first recipient.
- In 1966, she became the first person to swim the 22.5 km from Jersey to France in 9 hours 25 minutes.
- on 23 September 1969, she became the first person to swim the 66 km around the Isle of Jersey in 13 hours 55 minutes at the age of 19 when she started and finished at Gorey.
