Hugh Tucker is an open water swimmer, coach and escort pilot from South Africa.
Open Water Swimming Highlights
- He was named a CLDSA Hero by the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association.
- He was inducted as an Honor Contributor Coach of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, Class of 2018.
- He is the one of the oldest successful swimmers of the English Channel. A member of the Half Century Club, he was 54 when he crossed from England to France in 14 hours 46 minutes in 2004 on his fifth attempt.
- He is a marathon swimmer, observer and maker of a swimming shark cage for False Bay attempts.
- He has been piloting for the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association (CLDSA) from mid 1960's to the present.
- In 1961 at the age of 20, he participated in the United Nations Team, a six-member team that crossed the English Channel two ways with Corrie Ebbelaar, Tom Hetzel, Captain Manucher Tooluiy, Sergeant-Major Mehdi Maesoumi, and Ray Dixon who broke the two-way relay record in 24 hours 6 minutes.
- At the age of 21, he established the 14 km record between Robben Island and Woodstock Beach of 4 hours 9 minutes.
- He held the record from Three Anchor Bay to Robben Island in 2 hours 45 minutes in 1961.
- He held the record over the 9 km course from Simonstown to Muizenberg in 2 hours 41 minutes at a time he was touted as South Africa's top distance swimmer.
