- Penrose achieved the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming in a little over 10 months from start to finish, one of the briefest periods ever for the achievement of the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming.
- He has completed the Strait of Gibraltar on 16 October 2013 together with John DaPrato and David Cook in 5 hours 4 minutes to complete his third Oceans Seven channel.
- He is a member of the Overlord 70 relay team that crossed the English Channel on 8 June 2014.
- He completed the 14 km Cold Half marathon swim in Hong Kong on 24 January 2015 in the Naturally Buoyant category.
- He completed the NYC Swim's quiet swim on 24 August 2013 in 8 hours 42 minutes.
- He completed a 33.5 km crossing of the English Channel in 13 hours 32 minutes on 7 October 2012.
- He completed a 32.3 km crossing of the Catalina Channel on 30 July 2013 in 13 hours 44 minutes.
- He completed the 26.4 km Sri Chinmoy Marathon Swim from Rapperswil to Zurich in Lake Zurich, Switzerland in 2019 in 9 hours 31 minutes 41 seconds, at the age of 65.
- He completed a 15-mile (24.1 km) triple crossing of Lake Willoughby in Westmore, Vermont in 9 hours 30 minutes on 1 September 2021 escorted by Kathleene Callicott and co-piloted by Phil White and Rob Andersen.
- He finished 15th in the 2021 12.8 km Boston Light Swim in Massachusetts.
Overlord 70
Overlord 70 is a relay team that crossed the English Channel in 12 hours 8 minutes on 8 June 2014 to commemorate D-Day and to replicate the composition of the Allied Expeditionary Force of 1944. Its members included John Kulewicz, the team leader and an American lawyer from Columbus, Ohio, Bryan Avery, British information technology consultant, John Boyd, a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel now working for NATO, Joe Hall, a U.S. Air Force Colonel and B2 Stealth Bomber pilot, James Penrose, an American lawyer living in London, Edward Williams, a British marathon swimmer and swim instructor, and Don McNeil as the alternate, a Canadian-born physician who practices in Columbus, Ohio.
