James Tout (born 25 May 1953) is a 68-year-old American endurance athlete specializing in triathlons, marathon runs and open water swims from Austin, Texas.

Open Water Swimming Career

Tout is the author of Across The Pacific.
Tout has completed the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming and two Oceans Seven channels.
Tout has completed the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim a total of 10 times in 1985, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2015 and was halted by lightning in 2005.
His fastest circumnavigation was 7 hours 31 minutes at the age of 62.
On 28 July 1985, he finished 18th in the 45.9 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in 8 hours 36 minutes 20 seconds at the age of 32.
On 17 August 1987, he crossed the 33.2 km English Channel from England to France in 10 hours 33 minutes at the age of 34 escorted by Reg Brickell, Sr..
On 19 August 1990, he finished 17th in the 45.9 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 7 hours 57 minutes 53 seconds at the age of 37.
On 10 August 1991, he finished 13th in the 45.9 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 7 hours 44 minutes 7 seconds at the age of 38.
On 20 August 1994, he finished 13th in 45.9 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 8 hours 27 minutes 33 seconds at the age of 41.
On 13 August 1995, he finished 11th in 45.9 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 8 hours 57 minutes 20 seconds at the age of 42.
On 3 August 1976 he finished 13th in 45.9 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 8 hours 57 minutes 20 seconds at the age of 43.
On 19 July 1997, he finished 12th in 45.9 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 8 hours 27 minutes 54 seconds at the age of 44.

On 24 June 2006, he finished 20th in 45.9 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim in New York in 9 hours 23 minutes 22 seconds at the age of 53.
On 19 September 2015, he completed a 32.3 km crossing of the Catalina Channel from Santa Catalina Island to the Southern California mainland in 11 hours 18 minutes 33 seconds at the age of 62.
On 23 September 2015, he completed a 45.9 km solo circumnavigation swim around Manhattan Island in New York in 7 hours 31 minutes 26 seconds at the age of 62.
On 27 April 2016, he finished 10th in the 13.3 km crossing of Saguaro Lake at the SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona in 3 hours 41 minutes 38 seconds at the age of 62.

On 26 June 2016, he finished 4th in 29.5 km stage swim 1 in the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in New York in 5 hours 39 minutes 23 seconds at the age of 63.

On 21 June 2017, he finished 8th in 25.3 km stage swim in the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in New York in 3 hours 49 minutes 13 seconds at the age of 64.
On 22 June 2017, he finished 9th in 29.9 km stage swim in the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim in New York in 6 hours 7 minutes 8 seconds at the age of 64.
Between 25-28 April 2018, he completed all four stage swims of the SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona (9.5-mile or 15.2 km Saguaro Lake + 9-mile or 14.4 km Canyon Lake + 17-mile or 27.3 km Apache Lake + 6.2-mile or 10 km Roosevelt Lake), finishing 16th overall at the age of 64 in a cumulative time of 19 hours 5 minutes 33.5 seconds.
- On 25 April 2018, he finished 24th in the 13.3 km crossing of Saguaro Lake in the SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona in 4 hours 4 minutes 21 seconds at the age of 64.
- On 26 April 2018, he finished 24th in the 14.1 km crossing of Canyon Lake in the SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona in 4 hours 19 minutes 33 seconds at the age of 64.
- On 27 April 2018, he finished 26th in the 22.8 km crossing of Apache Lake in the SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona in 7 hours 4 minutes 34 seconds at the age of 64.
- On 28 April 2018, he finished 21st in the 10 km crossing of Roosevelt Lake in the SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona in 3 hours 37 minutes 5 seconds at the age of 64.
On 16 June 2018, he finished 10th in the 58 km END-WET event down the Red River from Belmont Park, North Dakota to East Grand Forks, Minnesota in the United States in 11 hours 39 minutes at the age of 66.
On 15 June 2019, he finished 7th in the 58 km END-WET event down the Red River from Belmont Park, North Dakota to East Grand Forks, Minnesota in the United States in 11 hours 39 minutes at the age of 66.
He swam the three channels between Maui, Lanai and Molokai in Hawaii on three successive days on 12-15 September 2019 in the Au I Na Mokupuni Ekolu Endurance Challenge Invitational:
- Day One across the 14.9 km Kalohi Channel between Lanai and Molokai in 6 hours 4 minutes 40 seconds
- Day Two across the 13.5 km Pailolo Channel between Maui and Molokai in 5 hours 50 minutes 10 seconds
- Day Three across the 14.1 km Auau Channel between Lanai and [[Maui in 7 hours 47 minutes
He finished 12th overall in the 4-day 66.9 km SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona in 21 hours 43 minutes 16.9 seconds on 1 May 2021.

Triathlon Career

He completed the Hawaiian Ironman World Championship on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1981 in 14 hours 28 minutes.

Triple Crown of Endurance Sports

Tout is the only human in history to have complete the Triple Crown of Endurance Sports with a successful Hawaiian Ironman in 1981, successful Boston Marathon in 3 hours 30 minutes in 1982 with a qualifying time of 2:48, and a successful crossing of the English Channel in 1987 on his fourth attempt in 10 hours 33 minutes. He attempted the English Channel in 1981, 1983, 1984, and 1986 (but didn’t get off the beach), and made it in 1987 when he increased his weight from 148 pounds on a 6’1” frame to a 187-pound Channel swimmer.

James Tout (U.S.A.) Long-overdue Triple Crowner
James Tout became the second oldest person to achieve the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, but the 62-year-old from Austin, Texas did it in dramatic fashion over a 4-day period where he completed his 10th lifetime circumnavigation, a 28.5-mile swim around Manhattan Island in New York performed only three days after completing his 20.2-mile Catalina Channel crossing in 11 hours 18 minutes in California. Most incredibly, his latest Manhattan Island Marathon Swim was his lifetime best in 7 hours 31 minutes, beating his previously best time set in 1991 as a 34-year-old. For battling back from heart disease, for achieving his goal of 2 marathon swims in 4 days, and for swimming the fastest he has even swum around Manhattan Island after nearly 3 decades, James Tout is a worthy nominee for the 2015 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year.
