Joëlle Brown-Beard (born 1988) is an American open water swimmer from Willard, Utah.
Open Water Swimming Highlights
- On 17 July 2022, she attempted a 19.5 km crossing of the Tsugaru Channel in northern Japan, but she aborted the swim after 8 hours 3 minutes 48 seconds due to strong currents and difficult conditions.
- She completed the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming with her circumnavigation swim around Manhattan Island on 28 June 2014.
- She set a goal in 2010 to swim the English Channel. She trained in a lake in Annecy, France, and in Willard Bay and Bear Lake in Utah. On 3 September 2012, Beard successfully swam from England to France in 12 hours 17 minutes under the governance of the Channel Swimming Association and escort of Reg Brickell, Jr. in the Viking Princess. She achieved her goal, and also became the first woman from the state of Utah to swim the English Channel.
- On 12 August 2013, she completed the 20.2-mile swim across the Catalina Channel with a time of 12 hours 15 minutes. She swam under the governance of the Catalina Channel Swimming Federation. Her pilot boat was the Outrider under John Pittman.
- On 27 September 2011, she became the first person to swim a double crossing (width) of Bear Lake. She swam it as her English Channel qualifier and swam it in a time of 6 hours 30 minutes.
- On 28 June 2014, she completed the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim with a time of 9 hours 25 minutes. With the completion of this swim, Beard became the 87th person in the world to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming and the first woman in Utah to do so.
- On 29 July 2016, she completed a 31.7 km solo crossing (length) of Bear Lake, Utah in a time of 11 hours 22 minutes.
- On 31 July 2018, she attempted a 19.5 km crossing of the Tsugaru Channel from Honshu to Hokkaido in northern Japan, started a 11:09 pm on 30 July in 23°C water, but she aborted the swim en route.
- On 15 June 2018, she swam for 19 hours in an attempt to cross the Molokai Channel from Molokai Island to Oahu.
- In August 2021, she once again attempted the 30 mile/48 km Molokai Channel. After 20 hours of swimming, the swim was aborted 2 miles/3 kilometers from shore due to extreme currents and severe weather.
- In July 2022, she attempted a 19.5 km crossing of the Tsugaru Channel from Honshu to Hokkaido in northern Japan. This swim was aborted due to missing the cutoff time for pacing, and pregnancy-related illness.
