Hanalei Bay Swim Challenge on Kauai in Hawaii
Kauaʻi or Kauai is geologically the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. With an area of 562.3 square miles (1,456.4 km2), it is the fourth largest of the main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago, and the 21st largest island in the United States. Known also as the Garden Isle, Kauaʻi lies 105 miles (169 km) across the Kaua'i Channel (Kaieiewaho Channel), northwest of Oʻahu. This island is the site of Waimea Canyon State Park and is site of several open water swims and Hanalei Bay, named as one of the world's top 100 beaches by CNN.
Open Water Swimming
- It is the traditional starting point of the 17-mile (27.3 km) crossing of the Kaulakahi Channel between Kauai and Niihau.
- It is the traditional finishing point of the 72-mile (115.8 km) crossing of the Kaieiewaho Channel between Oahu and Kauai.
- Australian open water swimmer Terence Bell of Solo Swim Hawaii completed a solo 177.48 km (110.28-mile) 14-day, 27-stage circumnavigation swim around Kauaʻi between 1-19 July 2019 that took him a total of 51 hours 57 minutes, escorted by Kaspar Paur, a sailor and a support escort crew member.
- On 8 August 2020, Stefan Reinke, Bill Goding, Lectie Altman, Marcus Guttmann, and Ryan Leong Guttmann finished a 27.3 km crossing from Barking Sands Beach on Kauai to Ni'ihau in 11 hours 38 minutes while Dr. Steve Minaglia also completed a crossing on the same day in 12 hours 38 minutes.
