Kent Nicholas is a 48-year-old American open water swimmer and race organizer who has served as a criminal defense attorney in Arizona for 20+ years.

Nicholas maintains a very supportive network of family and friends including teammates from Mesa Aquatics Club and wife, Candice, who has never missed a race.

S.C.A.R. Swim Challenge

In order to train for the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, Nicholas pioneered the S.C.A.R. Swim Challenge in the state of Arizona, an 41+ mile stage swim involving four lakes along the lower Salt River outside of Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A. S.C.A.R. stands for Saguaro, Canyon, Apache and Roosevelt lakes - all varied in their raw beauty and dramatic desert landscape. The first three lakes are from dam to dam varying in distance from 9 miles to 16 miles with the last swim being a 10 km night swim with glow sticks under a starlit sky. The 4-day stage swim is nominated for the 2014 World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year.

"The S.C.A.R. Swim Challenge set in the dry, rugged American southwest desert of Arizona is no longer under the radar. The secret is out about the out-of-the-way 4-day stage swim that focuses on camaraderie rather than competition, passion rather than pressure. Swimmers from around the world have discovered the joy of a 64.4 km series of swims in Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake, Apache Lake and Roosevelt Lake where flexibility and recovery play important elements just as do feeds and navigation.
