S.C.A.R. Swim Challenge
In order to train for the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, Nicholas pioneered the S.C.A.R. Swim Challenge in the state of Arizona, an 41+ mile stage swim involving four lakes along the lower Salt River outside of Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A. S.C.A.R. stands for Saguaro, Canyon, Apache and Roosevelt lakes - all varied in their raw beauty and dramatic desert landscape. The first three lakes are from dam to dam varying in distance from 9 miles to 16 miles with the last swim being a 10 km night swim with glow sticks under a starlit sky. The 4-day stage swim is nominated for the 2014 World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year.
Relay Records
- Nicholas was a member of the six-member HTC Relay team with Tina Neill (captain), Forrest Nelson, Emily Evans, Steve Lowe, and Mike Mitchell that set a new course record of 25 hours 48 minutes from a swim from San Clemente Island, around the western edge of Catalina Island, to the Southern California mainland at Cabrillo Beach on 25 July 2012. The HTC Relay broke the record of the Swim for Hope relay for the 52 statute mile channel swim.
- Nicholas was a member of Team FTD, an open water swimming relay consisting of Forrest Nelson, Becky Jackman-Beeler, Mike Mitchell, Emily Evans, and Tina Neill. The relay completed an unprecedented 6-way Catalina Channel crossing in 61 hours 6 minutes from 10-14 July 2014. Source: Evan Morrison of the Marathon Swimmers Forum on 14 July 2014.
- Nicholas was a member of California Screamin' Relay with Tina Neill, Forrest Nelson, Ernie Hoftyzer, Emily Evans, and Melodee Nugent when the team swam from Doctor's Cove on Santa Catalina Island around Santa Catalina Island to around Santa Barbara Island to return around the remaining part of Santa Catalina Island to finish at the Isthmus in 51 hours 55 minutes in 2015.
2014 World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year
"The S.C.A.R. Swim Challenge set in the dry, rugged American southwest desert of Arizona is no longer under the radar. The secret is out about the out-of-the-way 4-day stage swim that focuses on camaraderie rather than competition, passion rather than pressure. Swimmers from around the world have discovered the joy of a 64.4 km series of swims in Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake, Apache Lake and Roosevelt Lake where flexibility and recovery play important elements just as do feeds and navigation. Set along four majestic reservoirs on the Salt River in the desert wild, the brainchild of Kent Nicholas has become much more of an international happening than its initial beginnings as a rogue swim by locals. S.C.A.R. is a physical test and a psychological challenge made easier by the other participants. For its humble beginnings that have blossomed into a major marathon event, for its dedicated race director and all its helpful volunteers, for its unique course carved out of the desert wilds, the S.C.A.R. Swim Challenge is a worthy nominee for the 2014 World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year."
