Martin McMahon

Martin McMahon is a 59-year-old American open water swimmer, an ice swimmer, and a former water polo player at Villanova University from Simsbury, Connecticut.
Aquatic Career Highlights
- He achieved the Frosted Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming on 10 August 2021.
- An age-group swimmer from the age of 9, he swam in high school and played water polo at Villanova University.
- After his college graduation, he crossed the 33.5 km English Channel from England to France on 26 August 1985 in 11 hours 14 minutes 21 seconds at the age of 22 to become the 262nd swimmer, 29th American and 1st swimmer from the state of Connecticut. He raised US$1,400 for Connecticut's Special Olympics. This was his first organized marathon swim.
- On 19 August 1989, he finished 17th in the 45.9 km Manhattan Island Marathon Swim around Manhattan Island in New York in 8 hours 36 minutes 8 seconds at the age of 26.
- On 1 August 2009, he finished 8th in the 25 km Swim Across the Sound in Connecticut in 8 hours 21 minutes at the age of 46.
- He completed a bay swim from Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay in California.
- He competed in the Little Red Lighthouse Swim in 2006, 2008, and 2012 in New York City.
- On 8 December 2013, he completed a Ice Mile with Scott Dalrymple and Jonathan Gladstone in the 4.0°C water and 0.00°C air temperature in Boston Harbour, USA, swimming 1.05 miles in 32 minutes 38 seconds.
- He attempted to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming in July 2014 with a crossing of the Catalina Channel, but did not finish.
- On 3 May 2014, he competed in the inaugural Cold Water Challenge, a 2.6-mile jetty-to-jetty ocean swim in Penfield Beach in Fairfield, Connecticut and the second Cold Water Classic.
- On 26 July 2014, he finished 5th in the 12.6 km Boston Light Swim in 3 hours 23 minutes at the age of 51.
- In 2019, he completed the 25 km Border Buster in Lake Memphremagog.
- He will attempt the 40.2 km In Search of Memphre across Lake Memphremagog, Vermont in 2023.
- He completed the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming and the Frozen Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming with a 32.3 km crossing of the Catalina Channel from Santa Catalina Island to the Southern California mainland on 10 August 2021 at the age of 58 in his second attempt in 12 hours 8 minutes 47 seconds. He was escorted by Bottom Scratcher with John Pier, Doug Comstock, and observers Bob Needham and Don Van Cleve.
