Martina Grimaldi

Martina "Grimmy" Grimaldi (born in Bologna on 28 September 1988) is the bronze medalist in the 2012 Olympic 10km Marathon Swim and a highly decorated world class open water swimmer from Italy, finishing 24 times on the podium in 53 race starts to date over the course of her career. She was coached by Fabio Cuzzani (until April 2015), by Matteo Cortesi from April to August 2015, and Emanuele Sacchi in 2016 and 2017.

- She won the 2010 FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships 10 km race in Roberval, Canada.
- She earned the silver medal in the 2011 FINA World Championships in the 10 km Olympic qualifier in Shanghai, China.
- She won the opening race of the 2012 FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup season in Santos, Brazil.
- She won the highly competitive FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup and FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix races in Cozumel, Mexico in April 2013.
- She capped off her 2013 summer season with a gold medal victory in the 25 km FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
- She won the 10 km Campionato Italiano Assoluto in June 2013 in Luogo Napoli, Italy.
- She won the 2013 Traversée internationale du lac Mégantic in Quebec, Canada.
- She won the 5 km Campionato Italiano Assoluto race to qualify for the 2013 FINA World Swimming Championships.
- She won the 30 km 2013 Ohrid Lake Swimming Marathon in Macedonia.
- She won the 36 km Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli in Italy on 1 September 2013.
- She won the 2014 FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup race in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
- She won the 25 km marathon swim at the 2016 European Open Water Championships in Hoorn, Netherlands.
- She finished third overall in the 2013 FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix professional circuit.
- She finished first overall in the 2013 FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup professional circuit.
- She was nominated for the 2013 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year.
- She was selected as the 2013 LEN Open Water Swimmer of the Year.
- She won the 25 km marathon swim at the 2014 LEN European Swimming Championships.
- On 29 July 2017, she won the 63rd 32 km Traversée internationale du lac St-Jean in Roberval, Quebec, Canada in 6 hours 45 minutes 59.5 seconds.
- On 19 August 2017, she finished third in the 33 km FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix race in Ohrid Lake, Macedonia (Ohrid Lake Swimming Marathon).
- On 5 February 2017, she completed the Maratón Acuática Internacional Santa Fe - Coronda in Argentina in 9 hours 6 minutes 53 seconds.
- On 1 September 2013, she competed in the 36 km Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli in 6 hours 31 minutes 26 seconds.
- On 3 August 2013, she completed the 34 km Traversée Internationale du lac Memphrémagog in Quebec, Canada in 7 hours 37 minutes 30 seconds.
- She finished third overall in the 2017 FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix professional marathon swimming circuit.
- She finished fourth in the 10 km marathon swim leg of the LEN European Open Water Swimming Cup in Eilat, Israel on 25 March 2018.
Carriera
- Grimaldi è una nuotatrice italiana, in forza al Gruppo Sportivo Fiamme Oro. È una nuotatrice di fondo di livello internazionale, campionessa mondiale nei 10 km a Roberval nel 2010.
La sua carriera a livello internazionale è iniziata nel 2006 quando è giunta sesta nei 5 km agli Europei di nuoto di Budapest. L'anno successivo ha partecipato ai Mondiali di Melbourne, classificandosi sesta sempre sui 5 km. Dal 2008 ha cominciato a cimentarsi nei 10 km e agli Europei di Dubrovnik ha conquistato la prima medaglia internazionale con l'argento nei 10 km, sfiorando anche il podio sui 25.
Dopo il decimo posto ai Giochi di Pechino, ai Mondiali di Roma del 2009 si è aggiudicata la sua prima medaglia mondiale, bronzo nei 10 km dietro a Keri-Anne Payne ed a Ekatarina Seliverstova. Nel 2010, dopo essere entrata a far parte delle Fiamme oro, il Gruppo sportivo della Polizia di Stato, ha vinto la medaglia d'oro ai mondiali di Roberval nella gara dei 10 km precedendo la compagna Giorgia Consiglio mentre nella 25 km è stata squalificata e successivamente la medaglia di bronzo nei 25 km ai Campionati europei di nuoto di Budapest preceduta da Olga Beresnyeva e Angela Maurer.
Convocata per i mondiali cinesi di Shanghai del luglio 2011, ha nuotato nella gara dei 10 km conquistando l'argento, battuta ancora dalla britannica Payne e davanti alla greca Marianna Lymperta. Un mese dopo ha vinto un'importante gara preolimpica svolta a Londra, ad Hyde Park. A settembre ad Eilat ha vinto il suo primo titolo europeo nella 10 km precedendo la compagna Rachele Bruni di sei decimi all'arrivo.
