Melissa Gorman

Melissa Anne Gorman (born 11 December 1985 in Sydney, Australia) is a personable, outgoing, world-class Australian pool and open water swimmer who finished 11th at the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim at the 2012 London Olympics. She is a two-time FINA World Swimming Championships medalist - gold in the 2009 5K in Rome, Italy and bronze in the 2010 10K in Roberval, Canada.
She has won numerous open water swims around the world, from her home country and Fiji to America and South Africa including two wins at the prestigious RCP Tiburon Mile in 2011 and 2012, and three wins on the State Insurance New Zealand Ocean Swim Series to become the overall 2011-12 series champion. She won the 2012 Open Water Swimmer of the Year award from Swimming Australia. She won the 2013 BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series Open Water Challenge 10km race in Perth, Australia, the 2013 and 2014 State La Grande Swim and the Sand To Surf in New Zealand.
She also has 8 brothers and 1 sister, and is coached by Ken Wood.

Career
- At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Gorman won a silver medal in the 800 m freestyle
- At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Gorman finished 15th in the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim and 17th in the 800 m freestyle
- At the 2009 World Swimming Championships, Gorman stunned Olympic champion Larisa Ilchenko to win gold in the 5K
- At the 2009 RCP Tiburon Mile, Gorman won the first-place US$10,000 winner-take-all prize
- At the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Gorman won a bronze medal in the 800 m freestyle
- At the 2010 World Open Water Swimming Championships, Gorman won a bronze medal in the 5K
- At the 2011 RCP Tiburon Mile, Gorman won the first-place US$10,000 winner-take-all prize

2011 FINA World Championships
Gorman placed 4th (2:02:12.0) in the 2011 FINA World Championships in the 10K in Shanghai, China which qualified her for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, her second Olympics.
