Poliana Okimoto







Poliana Okimoto Cintra (born 8 March 1983) is a 36-year-old world-class professional Brazilian open water swimmer and bronze medalist in the 2016 Olympic 10K Marathon Swim on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro. She is coached by her husband Ricardo Cintra and was inducted as an Honour Swimmer in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, Class of 2018.

- She won a silver medal in Naples, Italy in the 5 km open water swim at the 2006 FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships.
- She won a silver medal in Naples, Italy in the 10 km marathon swim at the 2006 FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships.
- She won a gold medal in Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro in the 10 km marathon swim at the 2006 Pan American Games.
- She competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she finished 6th in the women's 10 km race.
- She swam at the 2008 FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships in Sevilla, Spain where she qualified for the 2008 women's Olympic 10K Marathon Swim.
- She won a bronze medal in Rome, Italy at the 2009 FINA World Swimming Championships in the 5 km open water swim.
- She won the overall title of the 2010 FINA 10KM Marathon Swimming World Cup series.
- She was named the 2010 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year.
- She won a gold medal in Guadalajara, Mexico in the 10 km marathon swim at the 2011 Pan American Games.
- She placed 6th (2:02:14.6) in the 2011 FINA World Championships in the 10K Marathon Swim in Shanghai, China which qualified her for her second Olympics at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
- She won the 2014 FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup race in Hong Kong on 5 October 2014.
- She won the professional category at the New World Harbour Race in Hong Kong on 6 October 2014.
- She won a silver medal in Barcelona, Spain in the 5 km open water swim at the FINA World Swimming Championships on 18 July 2014.
- She won a gold medal in in Barcelona, Spain in the 10 km marathon swim at the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships on 20 July 2014.
- She won a bronze medal in Barcelona, Spain at the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships in the 5 km team pursuit event.
- She was named the 2014 Swimming World Magazine's Female Open Water Swimmer of the Year and Premio Brasil Olimpico due to her 4-medal performance at the 2014 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain in the 5 km solo race, 5 km team pursuit relay competition, and the 10 km marathon swim.
- She won the 2014 King and Queen of the Sea (Desafio Rei e Rainha do Mar) together with Samuel de Bona on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- She won the 10 km La Patagones Viedma, the opening leg of the 2014 FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup circuit.
- She qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim by finishing 6th in the 10 km marathon swim at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
- She won the Olympic bronze medallist in the 10 km marathon swim in Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
- She finished 11th overall on the 2016 FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup professional marathon swimming circuit.
- She is the namesake of the Poliana Okimoto Trophy given to the male and females winners of the 10 km Super Challenge at the Rei e Rainha do Mar (King and Queen of the Sea) event.
- Her biography was co-authored by Daniel Takata Gomes and Hélio de la Peña in 2016.
Awards
Okimoto was honored as Brazil's Top Athlete in 2014; the Premio Brasil Olimpico is the most prestigious sports award given by the Brazilian Olympic Committee. She also received the 2010 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year award from the World Open Water Swimming Association and was nominated for the 2014 World Open Water Swimming Woman of the Year.
