Portstewart
Portstewart is a small seaside resort in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, neighbouring Portrush. Its harbour and scenic coastal paths form an Atlantic promenade leading to 2 miles of golden strand (Portstewart Strand). Portstewart is probably best known for this sandy beach, popular with surfers.
Portstewart was a popular holiday destination for Victorian middle-class families. Its long, crescent-shaped seafront promenade is sheltered by rocky headlands.
Open Water Swimming
Mercedes Gleitze swam from Donegal to Portstewart, an unprecedented 13-mile (22.5 km) crossing of 7 hours 55 minutes done in 1929, commissioned by the Town Clerk of Portstewart Urban Council and escorted by John Kane to boost tourism in the area. Heather Clatworthy will attempt to replicate this swim in 2016.
