The International Ice Swimming Association red jacket must be earned by swimming an Ice Mile

noun - The red jacket is given to ice swimmers who complete the renowned ice mile as sanctioned by the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA), an extreme swimming governing body that was founded by Ram Barkai to conduct and govern extreme cold water swimming events (i.e., ice miles) where the maximum water temperature is 41°F (5°C) and wetsuits are not allowed.

The red jacket is an honorary gift that must be earned by Ice members of the International Ice Swimming Association. Recipients of the red jackets are limited to individuals who successfully complete an Ice Mile accredited by the International Ice Swimming Association. Ice members receive a IISA certificate, badge, and the coveted red jacket.
