Robert Cossette
Robert Cossette (passed away 22 July 2016) of Canada was inducted as an Honor Swimmer in 2004 in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and was a member of the World Professional Marathon Swimming Federation. His daughter Christine Cossette is a fellow Honour Swimmer in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, inducted in 1982.
Open Water Swimming Career
- Despite being crippled in one leg by polio, Cossette participated eight times in the 32 km (19.8-mile) Traversée internationale du lac St-Jean between 1955 and 1965.
- On 8 August 1959, he crossed in 13 hours 0 minutes 52 seconds.
- On 7 August 1960, he crossed in 14 hours 44 minutes.
- On 5 August 1961, he crossed in 14 hours 37 minutes 17 seconds.
- On 16 August 1964, he crossed the English Channel from France to England in 12 hours 5 minutes.
- On 24 July 2004, he crossed lac St-Jean in Canada from Vauvert to Roberval, Quebec in 9 hours 50 minutes 45 seconds.
- Cossette participated in the 32 km (19.8-mile) Traversée de la Manche from England to France in 1965 in 12 hours 5 minutes
- Cossette raced in the 51 km (32-mile) Traversée du Lac Ontario (Marathon de Brading)
- Cossette completed a swim in the Ste-Anne de Beaupré
- Cossette competed in the 70 km (44-mile) Montréal swim
- Cossette competed in the 35 km (22-mile) Around Atlantic City Swim
- Cossette raced in the 16 km (10-mile) Trois-Rivières Swim
- Cossette competed in the Marathon de l’Expo de Toronto
- Cossette competed in the Lac Simon Swim
- Cossette competed in the Détroit de Juan de Fuca
- Cossette competed in La Gilman Chibougamau Swim
- Cossette was the first person to swim 37 km (23 miles) from Chicoutimi to Bagotville in the Saguenay River in Canada that resulted in the annual la Descente ou remontée du Saguenay numerous times.
- Cossette was president from 1973 to 1988 of the Marathon du Saguenay
- Cossette trained several swimmers for la Traversée internationale du lac St-Jean and the 37 km (23-mile) la Descente du Saguenay.
