Rosie Foley is a 49-year-old open water swimmer who also serves as a Marathon Swimming Mentor from Killaloe, Ireland.
Honours
Foley is an Honour Swimmer in the Hall of Fame – Marathon Swimming Ireland Class of 2022. Her Class of 2022 includes Honour Swimmers Elaine Burrows Dillane and Finbarr Hedderman and Honour Contributor Kevin Williams (Administrator) and Honour Contributor Noel Browne (Crew).
Open Water Swimming Highlights
- She achieved the Frosted Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming on 23 September 2022.
- She is certified as an IISA Official Observer L1 as of 1 March 2022.
- She completed a 39.32 km (or 36 km) unprecedented crossing of Lough Derg in Ireland in 13 hours 10 minutes on 21 June 2014 from swimmer's beach in Portumna, Co. Galway to Killaloe, Co. Clare. Lough Derg (from Irish Loch Deirgeirt, meaning "loch of the red eye") is the second-largest lake in Ireland and is the third-largest in the whole island (after Lough Neagh and Lough Corrib).
- On 31 January 2021 at Two-mile Gate, she completed an Ice Mile (1.11 miles) in 4.47°C water in 34 minutes 55 seconds at the age of 48.
- On 30 August 2020, she completed a 10 km swim in Galway Bay, Ireland.
- She completed a 33.5 km crossing of the English Channel from England to France in 2014.
- She completed the 45.9 km 20 Bridges Swim around Manhattan Island in New York City in June 2021.
- In 2021, she completed an Ice Mile in 34 minutes 55 seconds at the age of 48.
- On 22 September 2022, she achieved the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming after completing a 32.3 km crossing of the Catalina Channel from Santa Catalina Island to Palos Verdes Peninsula on the Southern California mainland at the age of 49.
Athletic Background
- The mother of three children and the all-around star athlete, few are as active or accomplished as Foley on the land and in the water. She has played camogie and gaelic football winning a county Clare championship in both codes and has won All Ireland medals in both gaelic football and rugby.
- She is a qualified swim teacher, tutor, water safety instructor and examiner and played international rugby winning 39 caps for Ireland having played in two rugby World Cups, two European Championships and 5 Six Nations Championships.
- With an honors degree in Physical Education & Geography and a Masters degree in Science from the University of Limerick, Foley teaches physical education and geography in St Anne’s Community College, Killaloe, Co Clare. and is involved in Derg athletics, community games, open water swimming, rugby and hurling as well as a member of Limerick Masters Swimming Club, Tralee Bay Swimming Club, Irish Water Safety.
