North Sea Stage Swim

The 60 km North Sea stage swim is from Southend-on-Sea, a small town on the North Sea, up the river Thames to Parliament in London where Pugh will deliver a petition to the British Prime Minister.

Objective

When Pugh reaches the Parliament in London after the North Sea stage swim, he will have swum 200 km among the most polluted and overfished bodies of water in the world. His campaign, Seven Swims in the Seven Seas for 1 Reason, will highlight the need for urgent action.

As the United Nations Patron of the Oceans, Pugh has a specific mission behind his swim: The United Nations is urging nations to set aside at least 10% of the world’s oceans as effective and well-managed Marine Protected Areas by 2020. Approximately 13% of the world’s land lies in protected areas, but less than 3% of the oceans are protected. Of that 3%, there is sadly in reality little protection.
