The Solent
The Solent is the strait that separates the Isle of Wight from the mainland of England. It is about 20 miles long and varies in width between 2.5 - 5 miles, although the shingle Hurst Spit which projects 1.5 miles into the Solent narrows the sea crossing between Hurst Castle and Colwell Bay to just over a mile.

Open Water Swimming
- Nick Laker, a British open water swimmer, set the fastest known time across the Solent on 10 October 2021, swimming 2.22 km from Hurst Castle on the British mainland to Colwell Bay on the Isle of Wight in 50 minutes 33 seconds.
- The Wild West Solent Swim is a 1.2-mile charity swim from Hurst Castle to Colwell Bay in England across the Solent. The Wild West Solent Swim is conducted in aid of West Wight Sports and Community Centre.
