A former national-level butterflyer, the 24-year-old Teresa Planas swam 39.8 kilometers (21.3 nautical miles) in the Menorca Channel from the Balearic island of Menorca to the island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean Sea in September 2011, setting the world record for both men and women in 12 hours 18 minutes 42 seconds. The previous record was established by Miquel Sunyer in 12 hours and 19 minutes. Planas became the first local swimmer to complete the Menorca Channel (she was born in Pòrtol on Mallorca) to succeed. Her swim was a benefit swim for the Spanish Cancer Society as a symbol of the struggle against adversity cancer patients have to go through every day.

BEST FEST

Planas is also one of the race directors of the BEST FEST along with Matthew O'Connor.

Menorca Channel

Planasis the record holder for the Menorca Channel (Canal de Menorca) that stretches 37 km between the Balearic islands of Menorca and Mallorca in the Mediterranean Sea.
