Wendy Van De Sompele

Wendy Van De Sompele is the 52-year-old American open water swimmer and Vice President of the Northwest Open Water Swimming Association, Inc. who serves as the manager of Seattle’s most popular public pools, Medgar Evers and Colman. She swims in Quartermaster Harbor or with the Dilworth Mermaids on Vashon Island.

Open Water Swimming Career

• On 6 August 2016, she became the first person in history to complete the Maury Island Circumnavigation in Vashon, Washington in 7 hours 23 minutes under the auspices of the Northwest Open Water Swimming Association and observation of Scott Lautman.
• She was a panelist at the inaugural Women In The Open Water panel discussion held on 24 March 2017 in West Seattle, Washington sponsored by Say Yes To Life Swims.
• Between 25-28 April 2018, she completed all four stage swims of the SCAR Swim Challenge in Arizona (9.5-mile or 15.2 km Saguaro Lake + 9-mile or 14.4 km Canyon Lake + 17-mile or 27.3 km Apache Lake + 6.2-mile or 10 km Roosevelt Lake), finishing 18th overall at the age of 52 in a cumulative time of 19 hours 6 minutes 1.4 seconds.
• On 26-29 April 2022, she competed in the SCAR Swim, a 4-day stage swim in Arizona.
