Marjorie Buffington
From Openwaterpedia
Marjorie Buffington was an American open water swimmer who competed in an ocean race in December 1926, a 12-mile marathon swimming competition held along the Southern California coast. The race started in Santa Barbara and finished in Carpinteria. Buffington competed against Zane Steenrod and Jean McKensie, but rough water forced Buffington out at Serena while Steenrod lasted until Summerland and McKensie was the only person to finish. This swim is considered the first or among the first successful solo marathon swims in the history of Southern California.
