Michael Johmann (born 2 January 1962) is an American open water swimmer from Louisville, Kentucky and an assistant professor of Humanities at University of Louisville.

Professional Background

B.A., U of L, 1983. M.A., Indiana University, 1987. Ph.D., Indiana University, 1992. Johmann teaches a variety of courses in literature, cultural history and the arts. He is the owner of A Book By Its Cover, Used and Rare Books in Louisville, and an expert appraiser of rare books and documents.

Open Water Swimming Career

  • He became a member of the Half Century Club when he crossed the English Channel from England to France at the age of 52 years, 6 months on 2 July 2014 in 13 hours 50 minutes in a swim ratified by the CS&PF. He was escorted by pilot Paul Foreman in the Optimist with Jim Boucher as his crew chief.
  • He completed the 28.5-mile Manhattan Island Marathon Swim on 1 August 2015 in 7 hours 45 minutes
