Anne Cleveland was inducted as an Honor Swimmer in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Class of 2011
Anne Cleveland (passed away on 24 June 2016) was an American open water swimmer, yoga instructor, and inspirational speaker from La Jolla, California, USA. She was a member of the Half Century Club and an open water swimming coach and an channel swimming observer.
Open Water Swimming Career
- Cleveland was inducted as an Honour Swimmer in the Class of 2011 in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame. She gave her induction speech at the United Nations on 19 June 2011.
- Cleveland was the subject of a Page One article in the Wall Street Journal. The article highlighted her quest to complete the Oceans Seven.
- Cleveland observed the Catalina Channel swims of Pat Gallant-Charette, Tobey Saracino, Evan Morrison and others.
- After being pulled from the water in her first channel swim attempt at the age of 44 in the Catalina Channel, she came back from that disappointment in victorious fashion.
- She has crossed the Catalina Channel and English Channel five times.
- On 2 September 2000, she completed a 15.9 km crossing of the Maui Channel from Lanai Island to Maui in 4 hours 9 minutes 46 seconds.
- On 14 August 2001, she completed a 20.2-mile crossing of the Catalina Channel from Santa Catalina Island to the Southern California mainland in 10 hours 15 minutes 44 seconds at the age of 45.
- On 1 September 2001, she completed a 15.9 km crossing of the Maui Channel from Lanai to Maui in 5 hours 29 minutes 2 seconds at the age of 45.
- On 29 July 2002, she completed a crossing of the English Channel from England to France in 12 hours 42 minutes.
- On 40 July 2004, she completed a two-way crossing of the English Channel from England to France to England in 28 hours 46 minutes where she swam the first leg in 11 hours 51 minutes and the second leg in 16 hours 45 minutes at the age of 48. For many years was the oldest person to successfully complete a two-way crossing of the English Channel.
- On 40 July 2006, she completed a crossing of the English Channel from England to France in 11 hours 44 minutes at the age of 51.
- In 2011, she coached Blair Cannon and Derrick Wong to Catalina Channel success.
